Utah State picked up a verbal commitment Thursday afternoon from Olympus High (UT) point guard Jordy Barnes. Barnes is a 6 foot 3 160-pound junior and will not be eligible to join the Aggies until the 2024 season. Barnes is also the son of legendary Olympus hoops coach and former Aggie shooting guard Matt Barnes. He is the second commitment for the class of 2024 for the Aggies, joining Hunter Hansen from Fremont High (UT). As a sophomore last season, Barnes averaged 11.9 points per game while shooting 65 percent from the field, 37 percent from three-point range, and 76 percent from the free throw stripe. He also averaged 5.1 rebounds, and a whopping 9.8 assists, and displayed quickness and anticipation by averaging 3.2 steals per game. Barnes held an offer from Southern Utah at the time of his commitment and chose to commit to Utah State just over a month after receiving his offer. Barnes is a member of the Utah Prospects AAU basketball program.
