Utah State has received a verbal commitment from University of Oregon defensive tackle Sir Mells. Mells made his official visit to campus over the weekend of May 19th. Mells is a 6-foot-3 315-pound redshirt freshman, who will join the Aggies in June for summer workouts. He has four seasons of eligibility remaining. During his lone season at Oregon, Mells played in one game and recorded a pass breakup. According to 247sports, coming out of Liberty High (NV), Mells was rated as the 1,013-best player in the country, the 135th-best defensive tackle in the country, and the 12th-best high school player in the State of Nevada. He is the fifth transfer portal signing of the offseason, joining former Arizona State offensive tackle Ralph Frias, former Colorado cornerback Simeon Harris, former Bowling Green EDGE rush end Blaine Spires, and former Wisconsin cornerback Al Ashford. At the time of his commitment, Mells had received offers from Alabama A&M, Coastal Carolina, Louisiana Tech, Marshall, and Portland State. Coming out of Liberty High, Mells originally had a slew of offers from Arizona, Central Michigan, Florida A&M, Fresno State, Maryland, Michigan, Morgan State, New Mexico State, Oregon, Oregon State, San Jose State, UNLV, USC, and Washington. I expect Mells to see the field sooner than later and he should compete for a starting role by 2024.
