Utah State picked up a verbal commitment late last night from Washington State University linebacker Gavin Barthiel. Barthiel was in Logan on his official visit during the weekend of December 16th and chose to make it official this week. Barthiel is a 6 foot 2 225-pound sophomore and will join the Aggies in January and participate in spring football. During his two seasons in Pullman, Barthiel did not see any game action. As a senior in 2020 at Lake Gibson High School (FL), he was named to the Sports Illustrated All-America Watch List. During his final high school season, he recorded 72 tackles with 14 tackles-for-loss including 3.0 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, 2 fumble recoveries, and one interception he returned 99 yards for a touchdown According to 247sports, coming out of Lake Gibson High School, Barthiel was rated as the 93rd-best linebacker in the country and the 110th-best player in the State of Florida. His rating would rank him as the 8th highest-rated recruit the Aggies have ever signed. He is the first transfer portal commitment and the nineteenth overall commitment for the Aggies 2023 recruiting cycle. Coming out of high school Barthiel originally held offers from Alcorn State, Appalachian State, Boston College, Charlotte, Coastal Carolina, Connecticut, East Carolina, Florida International, Florida A&M, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Georgia Tech, Iowa State, Kansas State, Kent State, Liberty, Louisville, Marshall, Minnesota, Mississippi State, Missouri, Nebraska, Pittsburgh, Prairie View A&M, Samford, Temple, Toledo, Troy, Tulane, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, Washington State, West Virginia, and Western Kentucky. At the time of his commitment, it is unknown how many offers Barthiel had received after leaving Washington State.
