This is the 12th article in a series previewing each team and position rankings in the Mountain West leading up to the 2024-2025 basketball season. This a review of the top 5 centers in the Mountain West.
Top 5 Centers:
- Nelly Joseph (New Mexico, Senior): Nelly’s first year at New Mexico was a success as he averaged close to a double-double with 9 ppg and 9 rebounds per game. He is one of the top defensive big men in the league and uses his athleticism to anchor the middle of the New Mexico defense (averaging 1.5 blocks per game last year) while also being efficient offensively.
- Bear Cherry (UNLV, Junior): Elite size at 6’11” and 280 lbs. and has scoring ability. Cherry has emerged in fall camp as big contributor for the rebels. He was considered one of the top JC big men this past year and chose UNLV over Florida State, Mississippi State, Utah State and Boise State.
- Brandon Love (Nevada, Junior): Transfer from Texas State where he averaged 10 ppg, 5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game last year. Brandon has the athleticism and size to compete at a high level in the Mountain West. It is not guaranteed that Love starts at Nevada as he will have to beat out returning starter KJ Hymes.
- Magoon Gwath (San Diego State, Freshman): Gwath took a redshirt year in 2023-2024 and since last January, Aztec media has been hinting at the potential of Gwath. Gwath is expected to start at one of the big man positions and has elite length and athleticism. He has NBA potential.
- Aubin Gateretse (Utah State, Senior): Last year Aubin averaged 12 ppg, 8 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game in only 25 minutes at Stetson. He helped Stetson win their first ASUN conference tournament as he averaged 19 ppg and was named to the all-tournament team.
Next 5 Up: Nikola Djapa (CSU), Miles Heide (SDSU), KJ Hymes (Nevada), Dylan Anderson (Boise), Dominic Parolin (Boise)
