Mountain West Basketball Position Rankings – Point Guard

This is the 16th article in a series previewing each team and position rankings in the Mountain West leading up to the 2024-2025 basketball season.

This a review of the top 5 point guards in the Mountain West.

Top 5 Point Guards:

Donovan Dent (New Mexico, Junior): Dent will look to be one of the top players across the conference this year. During his sophomore year he averaged 14 ppg and over 5 assists per game and was 2nd team All-Conference. With him having the full reigns this year, expect his numbers to continue to increase. Big year coming in for Dent.
Dedan Thomas (UNLV, Sophomore): The former 5-star recruit did not disappoint in his freshman year as he averaged 13 ppg and 5 assists per game. He was awarded co-freshman of the year due to his efforts.
Alvaro Cardenas (Boise State, Senior): Cardenas transfers from San Jose State and gives Boise playmaking that they were sorely missing last year. He will pair extremely well with Boise’s forwards due to his ability to create and run an offense.
Drake Allen (Utah State, Senior): Allen transfers to Utah State after averaging 12 ppg and 4 assists per game at UVU last year. Allen has excellent size for his position and expectations are that his game will pair well with the offensive system at Utah State.
Bowen Born (Colorado State, Senior): The rising senior transferred from Northern Iowa where in his prior 2 seasons averaged 13 ppg and 18 ppg respectively. Born has the ability to knock down the 3 and is expected to take over the starting role at CSU.
